Water types on the Western Slope
- Freestone rivers (Gunnison approaches, Colorado River corridor): variable clarity, slick rock, cold water even in warm air.

Safety baseline for every trip
- USCG-approved PFD sized for each person when boating or kayaking; wear it.
- Whistle, throw bag when on craft; first-aid + emergency blanket for remote approaches.
- Cold-water respect: Colorado rivers stay dangerous even when air is warm.
- Tell someone put-in, take-out, and return time; check thunderstorms and wind.
- Clean, drain, dry to prevent aquatic nuisance species (AIS) spread.
