Why stewardship matters here

Western Slope waters see heavy weekend pressure, low late-summer flows, and warm water that stresses cold-water fish. CPW publicly advises anglers to follow mandatory or voluntary closures, move when water approaches about 70-71 F, fish earlier or higher, land fish quickly, keep fish submerged while unhooking, and avoid prolonged photo holds (CPW Fishing, last checked September 12, 2026 (America/Denver)). Leave No Trace for anglers (CPW brochure themes)

The 2026 Colorado Fishing Brochure reprints Leave No Trace principles in partnership with the Leave No Trace Organization. Apply them on every Western Slope trip:

  1. Plan ahead and prepare: Know local regs, size/quantity limits, weather, and emergencies before you leave.
  2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces: Use existing paths and sites; do not cut new bank trails through willow or wetland edges.
  3. Dispose of waste properly: Pack out all trash, including monofilament, live-bait containers, food scraps, and toilet paper.
  4. Leave what you find: Do not transfer fish between waters (illegal in Colorado). Avoid fighting fish to exhaustion; keep fish in water when handling for release; do not touch gills.
  5. Minimize campfire impacts: Use established rings where fires are allowed; never burn trash or plastics.
  6. Respect wildlife: Humanely dispatch keepers; store food and trash securely; never feed wildlife.
  7. Be considerate of other visitors: Give space on popular banks (Corn Lake, Connected Lakes, Riverfront access) and keep noise reasonable.

Banks, vegetation, and access etiquette

  • Stay on established trails and hardened banks along the Colorado River corridor and James M. Robb units whenever possible.
  • Avoid crushing young willows, reeds, and wet meadow edges—those plants stabilize banks and shade water.
  • Respect private property off the public corridor; confirm park fees/hours for state park sections.
  • Pack a dedicated trash bag in your kit (see the trip checklist).

Catch-and-release and warm-water ethics

When regulations or ethics call for release—or when water is warm—CPW-aligned handling reduces stress:

  • Wet hands thoroughly before touching a fish.
  • Keep fish submerged while removing the hook whenever possible.
  • Use tackle strong enough to land fish quickly; avoid exhausting fights.
  • Do not squeeze the body or touch the gills.
  • Skip long out-of-water photo holds when water nears about 70 F+; CPW has asked anglers to avoid removing fish from water for photos during warm periods.
  • Release alive into the same waterbody; never move live fish between waters.
  • If water is too warm for cold-water species, switch waters, fish earlier, target warm-water species where legal, or take a rest day—verify on the Fishing Atlas.

AIS: clean, drain, dry

Aquatic nuisance species threaten Western Slope waters. Clean, drain, and dry boats, kayaks, waders, and nets between every use. Confirm ANS inspection / stamp needs for your craft on official CPW boating pages before launching.
