1) License and regulation verification

  • Confirm your Colorado fishing license is current for the date of your trip.
  • Confirm Habitat Stamp requirements for your age and season.
  • Read water-specific rules for your destination (bag limits, bait rules, fly/lure only, seasonal closures).
  • Check AIS (aquatic nuisance species) inspection needs if launching a boat or kayak.
  • Save the CPW fishing page and any water bulletin links offline before you lose cell service.

2) Safety essentials (Western Slope + altitude)

  • USCG-approved PFD sized correctly for each person on the water.
  • Whistle, throw rope / rescue bag when boating or kayaking.
  • First-aid kit + emergency blanket; know hypothermia signs in cold water.
  • Sun protection: UPF layers, polarized sunglasses, water, electrolytes.
  • Tell someone your put-in, take-out, and expected return time.
  • Weather check for wind, thunderstorms, and rapid mountain changes.

3) Water-specific packing

Rivers / freestone (Colorado River corridor, Gunnison approaches)

  • Wading belt + staff if wading; felt vs rubber sole rules for travel waters.
  • Barbless options ready for catch-and-release waters.
  • Indicator / nymph or spinner kit matched to stained vs clear water.

Reservoirs / lakes (high country and valley reservoirs)

  • Anchor / trolley kit for kayaks if needed; boat lights and whistle where required.
  • Deeper presentations for lake trout / walleye as applicable.
  • Wind plan: shorter casts, secure rods, PFD on.

Shore / bank days

  • Rod holder / spike, polarized glasses, sun shade, trash bag (leave no trace).
  • Extra water and layers for altitude and dry Western Slope air.

4) Check CPW closures and conditions the morning you leave

  • Re-check CPW fishing for emergency closures, fire restrictions, and water notices.
  • Confirm boat ramp / park access hours and fees.
  • Confirm road / trailhead status for alpine approaches.

5) After the trip

  • Clean, drain, and dry boats/kayaks/waders to prevent AIS spread.
  • Note what worked (water clarity, flies/lures, wind) for your next report.
