Western Colorado Fishing Trip Checklist

When you climb from the Grand Valley floor (4,586 ft) up to the Grand Mesa (10,000+ ft) or drive east toward the Gunnison Basin, the weather can swing thirty degrees in an hour. Here is the practical truck checklist we run through in Grand Junction before heading out.

1. Licenses, Passes & Official Maps

• Valid Colorado fishing license (required for anglers age 16+) and your vehicle State Parks pass if visiting Highline Lake, Vega, Rifle Gap, Sweitzer, Ridgway, or James M. Robb.
• Offline copy of the CPW fishing regulations brochure on your phone (cell service drops quickly in De Beque Canyon, Plateau Canyon, and on top of the Mesa).
• Boaters: your green CPW ANS inspection seal and previous inspection receipt.

2. Clothing & Desert-to-Mountain Layers

• Broad-spectrum sunscreen, lip balm, and at least one gallon of drinking water per person on desert canyon days (NPS Colorado National Monument safety guidance).

3. On-the-Water Safety Gear

• A properly fitted, USCG-approved life jacket (PFD) for every person on a boat, kayak, or paddleboard (NWS cold-water safety).
