VCO Ice-on watch, week of October 15, 2026

Colorado reservoirs freeze on different schedules based on elevation, depth, and wind exposure. Use our interactive Elevation & Basin Filter, CPW Ice Thickness Reference, and Pre-Ice Safety Checklist below before you step onto early ice.

1. Filter Reservoirs by Elevation Tier & Region

High-elevation bowls (9,500–10,200+ ft) skim and cap weeks ahead of deep canyon reservoirs (Blue Mesa, Ruedi) or Grand Valley basins.

Water Elev. Freeze Order & Key Target Species Official Source & VCO Guide
Grand Mesa Lakes (Island, Cobbett, Sunset) ~10,000–10,200 ft First Western Slope basins to skim and cap; rainbow, brook, cutthroat, splake. Highway 65 winter travel required. USFS GMUG · Trip Kit
Taylor Park Reservoir ~9,330 ft Cold high-Gunnison bowl; lake trout, northern pike, rainbow trout, kokanee. Check USBR storage & Cottonwood/Almont access. USBR Upper CO · Trip Kit
Vega State Park (Vega Reservoir) ~7,990 ft Premier Collbran Plateau ice fishery; rainbow, cutthroat, cutbow. Boat ramps close Nov 1; winter shore & ice access open. CPW Vega · Trip Kit
Lake Granby (ANRA) ~8,280 ft Arapaho NRA; lake trout, rainbow, brown, kokanee. Shallow bays cap before the main basin. USFS ANRA · Trip Kit
Blue Mesa Reservoir (Curecanti NRA) ~7,519 ft Iola Basin and Cebolla Basin freeze ahead of Sapinero Basin; yellow perch, lake trout, rainbow, kokanee. NPS Curecanti · Trip Kit
Ruedi Reservoir ~7,766 ft Fryingpan Valley; lake trout, rainbow, yellow perch, kokanee. Deep main channel caps later than coves. VCO Ruedi Guide · Trip Kit
Rifle Gap State Park ~5,960 ft Yellow perch, walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout. Motorized ramps close Nov 1; winter shore & ice open when capped. CPW Rifle Gap · Trip Kit
Harvey Gap State Park ~6,400 ft Silt / Rifle corridor; yellow perch, northern pike, rainbow trout, channel catfish, crappie. CPW Harvey Gap · Trip Kit

2. CPW Clear-Ice Depth Checker

4 inches of clear, solid ice: general CPW guideline minimum for walking and ice fishing on foot. Drill test holes as you move.

Source: CPW Ice Fishing & Safety. White/slush ice is roughly half as strong as clear blue ice; pressure ridges, inlets, and springs thin ice without warning.
