Colorado Cold-Water and Shoulder-Season Safety Checklist
In Colorado's spring and fall, assume the water is colder than the air feels. Wear a well-fitted life jacket on boat and kayak days, or keep one within reach. Dress for the chance you'll end up in the water. Carry a whistle and a throw bag in a boat. Check CPW's boating and fishing rules before you leave the truck.
This isn't a rescue course or legal advice.
Why spring and fall are riskier
Sunny valley days on the Western Slope can hide cold current, snowmelt surges and fast weather changes. Hypothermia risk goes up when people dress for the air instead of the water.
Cold-water checklist
- Life jacket. Use one that's USCG-approved and sized right. Wear it when the boat or the conditions call for it. Check CPW's current wording before you launch.
- Layers. A wool or synthetic base, a wind shell, and a spare dry layer in a dry bag.
- Signals. A whistle, plus a throw bag or line for boat and kayak groups.
- Feet. Shoes with grip, and a wading belt if you wade.
- Partners. Go with a buddy, and leave a float plan for reservoirs and river trips.
- Limits. Know how well you swim and can rescue yourself. Cancel when wind and chop build.
