Grand Mesa Lakes Fishing Report and Conditions (Island, Cobbett & Ward Lakes)
Current Water & Ramp Conditions
- Grand Mesa Lakes Telemetry: Grand Mesa Lakes: monitored onsite at the park rather than through a live USGS stream gage (Oct. 27, 2026). Check road and forest status via USFS Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre & Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests and COtrip (CO-65 Scenic Byway).
- Check CPW regulations for your water.
USFS Construction Closures, Access & High-Elevation Safety
- USFS Island Lake Day-Use Closure Order (GMUG-2026-04): The Island Lake day-use area and NFS Trail 748 (Island Lake Trail) are under a seasonal June to November construction closure order (in effect through Dec. 31, 2026 at 5 p.m.), and Little Bear Campground is closed year-round. Verify open shoreline and adjacent lake access (Cobbett Lake, Ward Lake, Sunset Lake, Mesa Lakes) on USFS GMUG Alerts & Notices before parking.
- 10,000+ ft Weather & Early Skim Ice: At 10,000 to 10,500 ft along CO-65, overnight freezes form thin skim ice in late October and November. Never walk on early skim ice, and pack winter layers, traction, and a PFD for open-water canoe/kayak launches.
About the Waters & Verified Species
Rising to 10,000+ ft elevation ~50 to 65 minutes east of Grand Junction via I-70 E and CO-65 Scenic Byway, the Grand Mesa National Forest holds hundreds of timberline lakes and reservoirs across Mesa and Delta counties.
- CPW Fishing Atlas Species: Rainbow trout, brook trout, cutthroat trout, cutbow trout, brown trout, tiger trout, splake (in select waters such as Island Lake and Cottonwood Lake #1), and Arctic grayling (in select waters such as Kitson, Silver, and Bonham reservoirs) (CPW Fishing Atlas #90693).
- CPW Stocking Report: Check the CPW Fish Stocking Report for high-country stocking history.
