1. Check Flows Before Stepping Into the Canyon

Wading and floating conditions on the Gunnison depend directly on upstream dam releases from the Wayne N. Aspinall Unit (Blue Mesa, Morrow Point, and Crystal reservoirs) and the Gunnison Tunnel diversion. Always check live USGS flows (including the Gunnison River near Grand Junction `09152500` on our Western Slope Gages page) and NWS Grand Junction weather before committing to a canyon trail or boat launch.

2. Wading, Canyon Heat & Cold-Water Safety

• Slick Basalt & Pocket Water: Gunnison River boulders are slick and currents push hard along the canyon walls. Wear a wading belt cinched snug, use a wading staff in heavy flows, and wear a USCG-approved life jacket whenever you float (NWS cold water safety).
• Flash Floods & Desert Heat: In the lower canyon and Escalante / Bridgeport reaches, summer temperatures climb Past 95°F and afternoon monsoon cells can send muddy flash floods down side gulches (NPS desert safety). Carry plenty of drinking water and never camp or park in a dry wash.
• Check Special Regulations: Several sections of the Gunnison River carry Gold Medal status, artificial-flies-and-lures-only rules, or special slot limits. Verify the exact section you're fishing in the CPW fishing regulations brochure.
