Small-craft safety checklist
- PFD: USCG-approved, sized, and worn when craft or conditions call for it—verify current CPW wording.
- Cold water: Assume immersion risk; wool/synthetic layers; spare dry layer in a dry bag.
- Signaling: Whistle; throw bag/line for boat/kayak teams.
- Float plan: Tell someone put-in, take-out, and return window; download offline maps where cell drops.
- Go / no-go: Cancel when wind, chop, or rising water stack up beyond your self-rescue limits.
- ANS: Clean, Drain, Dry between waters; complete inspections when applicable.
