Parachute and Rulison Colorado River Access Day Prep

Parachute and Rulison sit on the Colorado River in the middle of the valley, between the Rifle Gap area and De Beque canyon country. Before a day here, confirm a public access that's open now: a signed ramp, a park or an SWA.

Assume most river-bottom land is private unless it's clearly posted. Check the flow and the weather. Plan for Clean, Drain, Dry and the ANS rules if you launch. Keep fog and wind in mind as reasons to wait or stay off, and bring cold-water habits. Check fishing rules on CPW or eRegulations, never from a blog table.

This is trip prep, not a fishing report and not a promise of a fish. Access points and ownership change, so check again the morning you leave.

What this page covers

This stretch east of Grand Junction is useful when you're linking Rifle Gap reservoir days to floats near De Beque canyon. It also works when you want a shorter valley access day that isn't Fruita or Loma. This page covers how to confirm public put-ins and how to respect private banks. We don't make up bag limits or claim the fish are biting, and we don't make up ramp lists as a go signal.

The access

Town ramps, county parcels and informal pull-outs change status. If you can't confirm a signed public ramp, park or SWA that morning, pick a verified public put-in somewhere else. Try Rifle Gap when it's open for that plan, or verified access at De Beque. The Fruita and Robb units or Loma SWA work too. Don't force a private bank. Read our valley public-access etiquette guide with this one.

Before you go

  • Name the access. Say the ramp, park or SWA out loud. "Somewhere by Parachute" isn't a plan.
  • Private land. Most river-bottom parcels are private. Stay on confirmed public access. Don't cut fences or park in unmarked pull-outs.
  • Flow and your boat. Cancel when the current, wind or your skill don't match the day. See river paddle safety.
  • Fog and morning wind. Mornings along I-70 can start with low visibility and then turn windy. Use the fog and morning wind go or no-go.
  • Heat and cold water. Hot desert air doesn't mean warm water. Wear a life jacket in a boat and bring a spare dry layer. See layering for desert heat and cold water.
  • The shuttle. A float here needs a real take-out on public land. Don't count on a private bridge as your exit.

Clean, drain, dry

Moving a boat between Rifle Gap, the valley river and the canyon still means Clean, Drain, Dry and any required inspections. Our habits are in the ANS guide.

Fishing rules

We don't publish bag, possession or size limits. Check CPW fishing, eRegulations and our fishing laws page.
