Colorado waters change fast. A calm morning on Blue Mesa or Rifle Gap can turn into whitecaps by noon, and snowmelt rivers run cold well into summer. Please keep these safety basics in mind whenever you head out with Viral Cast Outfitters gear or read our trip notes.

1. Check Official Conditions, Ice Thickness & Regulations First

Our water guides and reports share public agency links and field notes to help you plan, and conditions on the water can shift between the time you read a report and the time you arrive at the ramp.

• Always verify current fishing rules, closures, and bag limits in the official Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) fishing regulations brochure.
• Check river flows on USGS or Colorado DWR gages and weather alerts from the National Weather Service (Grand Junction) before leaving home.
• On winter waters, remember that CPW does not declare any lake "safe ice." Test clear ice thickness yourself with a spud bar and auger as you go, carry ice picks and a throw rope, and stay clear of pressure ridges and open slush channels.

2. Personal Flotation & Cold-Water Safety

Cold water shock is a year-round hazard on Colorado rivers and reservoirs. Always wear a properly fitted, USCG-approved personal flotation device (life jacket) on boats, kayaks, and paddlecraft, and dress for the water temperature rather than the afternoon air. 3. Safe Handling of Hooks, Knives & Tackle

• Keep the 7" fillet knife in its protective leatherette sheath whenever you aren't actively cleaning fish, and always cut away from your body and hands on a stable board.
• Never pull on snagged 15 lb PE braided line with bare hands, as thin braid under tension can cut skin. Wrap a wooden dowel or cloth tool to break off a snag safely.
• Keep carbon fishing rods away from overhead power lines and seek shelter in a hard-topped vehicle or building as soon as you hear thunder.
