Short answer: On Western Slope reservoirs and river corridors, treat rising wind and chop as a cancel trigger for small craft. Wear or stage a USCG-approved PFD, carry whistle / throw aid, dress for cold immersion, and verify current CPW boating guidance before you launch. Why wind ends days early here
Valley reservoirs (Highline, Rifle Gap pattern) and desert-canyon river reaches can turn from flat to pushy in one weather pulse. Small craft lose control long before “big water” looks scary from the bank.
Go / no-go checklist (educational)
- Forecast + eyes on water: Check a trusted forecast, then watch whitecaps and boat traffic at the ramp before you commit.
- Skill honesty: If self-rescue or swimming in cold water is uncertain, stay ashore.
- PFD on: Sized USCG-approved PFD worn when craft or conditions call for it—verify CPW wording.
- Throw / whistle: Stage throw aid and whistle for kayak / boat teams.
- Cold water: Air heat does not equal water temperature; spare dry layer in a dry bag.
- Exit plan: Know the nearest take-out / lee shore; cancel when wind stacks with current or boat wake.
- ANS: Still Clean, Drain, Dry and complete inspections when required—weather cancel does not skip biosecurity next trip.
