Mack Mesa Lake Prep: Highline's Sister Water (Western Slope)

Mack Mesa Lake is the smaller sister water to Highline Lake, inside Highline Lake State Park near Loma in the Grand Valley. CPW lists it for kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing, with limits on hand-launched and electric-only boats. Check the live park highlights before you strap on a board or tow a small boat.

Mack Mesa doesn't have its own CPW park page, so use the Highline page and highlights. Don't guess hours, fees or boat rules from memory.

Before you go

  • Same park, different water. Say "Mack Mesa" out loud before you leave. That way you don't slip into Highline's motorized west-ramp plan.
  • Hand launch. CPW limits Mack Mesa to hand-launched boats like paddleboards and kayaks, plus small electric-motor boats when allowed. Read the live highlights for the gas and diesel ban and the inspection steps for electric motors.
  • Passes and alerts. Confirm entrance requirements on the live Highline page. Read the morning construction, fire and lake alerts too.
  • ANS. CPW lists Highline Lake and Mack Mesa Lake as infested with zebra mussels. Read the live status on the park page and CPW's ANS lists, not this blog. Complete the required inspections and Clean, Drain, Dry. Don't make up your own shortcuts.
  • Wind. Valley reservoirs get rough for small boats. Decide your go or no-go before you commit, using the wind checklist below.
  • Shore kit. Polarized glasses, sunscreen, a hat, water, shade, a whistle and a spare dry layer.

Staying safe

Wear a well-fitted, USCG-approved life jacket in any boat, or keep one within reach. The water is cold even when the desert air is warm. Keep kids within arm's reach near banks.
