Blue Mesa Reservoir Trip Guide: Wind, Cold Water, and What CPW Lists
Blue Mesa Reservoir sits near Gunnison inside Curecanti National Recreation Area. The National Park Service calls it the largest body of water in Colorado, with 96 miles of shoreline. From Grand Junction, most valley anglers treat it as a full day or an overnight. Size is the whole story here: big water, big wind, and cold temperatures.
What CPW says you can catch
CPW's Blue Mesa page highlights trophy lake trout and good chances at brown trout, rainbow trout, kokanee salmon, and yellow perch. The Park Service adds that CPW relies on Blue Mesa kokanee for eggs that help stock other Colorado waters, and that a large lake trout population has been cutting into kokanee numbers. That is why the special regulations here matter. Read them before you keep anything.
Shore or boat?
CPW notes that several boat ramps serve boat anglers and many access sites serve shore anglers. NPS keeps a page on which ramps are open and the hours for watercraft inspections, which change with the season and water level. If you are trailering, check it the day before.
How we would plan a Blue Mesa day
- Check the NPS boating page the day before for ramp and inspection updates.
- Read the forecast for wind, and plan the time you will be off open water. Earlier is better.
- Pick a shore spot or a small, sheltered area to fish first. Do not start with the longest crossing.
- Bring a full dry change, extra food, and water. Services can be far apart around a lake this size.
- Tell someone which ramp or pullout you are using and when you will check in.
If the wind comes up early, fish from shore or call it. The lake will be there next weekend.
Safety
- Afternoon wind. NPS warns that strong afternoon winds and storms can make Blue Mesa hazardous, and tells boaters to head for shore as soon as strong wind starts. Plan to fish the morning and be off open water early.
- Cold water all season. NPS says water temperatures stay cold through much of the season. CPW calls anything under 68 degrees dangerous. Wear your life jacket, and dress for immersion.
- Distance. Arms of the reservoir reach into canyons. Help can be far away, and cell coverage can be spotty.
- Ice season. If you come back for ice season, remember that ice is never the same everywhere. Check NPS conditions and measure as you go. We do not call ice safe.
Verify regs
CPW lists special regulations for lake trout and kokanee at Blue Mesa. Read them on the CPW Blue Mesa page and in the current CPW Fishing Brochure. Then check the NPS Curecanti fishing page and boating page for park rules and ramp status. Colorado requires inspection for trailered and motorized boats, covered on CPW Boat Inspections.
