Family Shore Days at James M. Robb State Park: A Kids Safety Plan
The ponds and river sections at James M. Robb Colorado River State Park are some of the easiest places in the Grand Valley to take kids fishing. Parking is close, there are trails and picnic spots, and you can keep the day short. Easy does not mean careless, though. Here is the plan we use for family shore days.
Pick the right section for your group
CPW describes the park as five sections: Fruita, Connected Lakes, the Colorado River Wildlife Area and Pear Park Trails, Corn Lake, and Island Acres. Pond edges are usually calmer than the main river. For little kids, pick a spot where you can see everyone at once and the bank is flat and dry. Corn Lake is the main park office, so it is a good first stop if you have questions.
Supervision rules for the bank
- Arm's reach for young kids and weak swimmers. One adult is the water watcher at all times, and that adult is not fishing.
- Trade off the watcher job on a schedule so nobody drifts.
- Set a line on the bank kids do not cross without an adult. Undercut edges and wet rock are where falls happen.
- Hooks and casting: teach a look-behind before every cast and keep space between young anglers.
- Bathroom and snack breaks together, so nobody wanders off alone.
Life jackets for kids
CPW requires children 12 and younger to wear a life jacket whenever their vessel is on the water. On a shore day there is no boat, but a fitted life jacket on a non-swimmer near the water is still a smart call. Check the label and fit: it should be snug and not ride up over the chin. CPW also notes that inflatable life jackets are approved only for people 16 and older. If you do not own kid sizes, CPW's Highline Lake State Park near Loma runs a free life jacket loaner program at its visitor center. For cooler shoulder-season days, also read our cold-water trip checklist.
Safety
- Cold water: CPW says water below 68 degrees is dangerous. A fall in can cause gasping. Never let a child wade in to grab a snag.
- Heat: pack more water than you think, hats, and a shade plan. See the NWS heat safety tips.
- Boat traffic: stay clear of ramps and keep lines out of the way of anyone launching.
- Storms: if you hear thunder, pack up and head to the car.
- Quit early: end the day while the kids still want more.
Verify regs
CPW says kids 15 and under fish free in Colorado, but adults helping them still need their own license if they fish. Check CPW Fishing, the current CPW Fishing Brochure, and the James M. Robb park page for passes, hours, and any closures before you go.
Shop related
We do not sell kids' life jackets, so get one fitted at a local shop. For the parents, our VCO Tumbler and trucker hat are in our merch shop. The VCO Safety Kit is waitlist only, with nothing to pay today.
