Kannah Creek and Grand Mesa Fishing Report, Week of October 8, 2026
This is a dated weekly report built only from official gages and Colorado Parks and Wildlife notices, checked the evening of Oct. 8, 2026. It is not a bite report. We have no verified catch information for this water this week, so we do not guess at one. Re-check the linked sources the morning you go.
Kannah Creek and the Grand Mesa lakes, week of October 8
Lower Kannah Creek is nearly dry below the diversion. For the high lakes there is no official gage, temperature or ice data, and we will not fill that gap with guesses.
Conditions
- Kannah Creek: Colorado DWR KANJUNCO, Kannah Creek below the Juniata Enlarged Diversion, read 0.36 cfs at 8:45 p.m. on Oct. 8. Daily averages fell from 4.46 cfs on Sept. 30 to 0.49 cfs on Oct. 7. That is the lower creek below a diversion, not the high country.
- Grand Mesa lakes: No USGS, DWR or CPW source gives current levels, water temperatures or ice for the individual Grand Mesa lakes. We have no condition data for them this week.
- CPW proposal: CPW has proposed making Scotland Peak Reservoir (also called Broke Leg Slough), a pond under an acre on the Grand Mesa, catch-and-release with artificial flies and lures only, to protect Colorado River cutthroat. It goes to the Parks and Wildlife Commission at its Nov. 4-5 meeting; current rules stay until then (CPW Oct. 1 release). CPW says the Mesa has more than 100 stocked and wild fisheries.
- Stocking and closures: No Grand Mesa water or Kannah Creek is on the CPW trout stocking report as of the Oct. 2 update, and none is on the CPW closures list (linked from the CPW fishing page).
- Ice: No CPW ice notice for the Mesa. Do not walk on any skim ice; nothing official says it is safe.
Reading the numbers
At a third of a cfs, lower Kannah is not a fishing trip this week. The high Mesa lakes are a separate trip, and without official data we cannot tell you their levels or temperatures. Vega has its own report this week (linked below). We have no catch reports.
Access
Check roads and public shoreline on the CPW Fishing Atlas and current Grand Mesa National Forest notices before you drive up. Fall big-game seasons run on the Mesa.
Safety
The Mesa is far higher and colder than Grand Junction. Pack real layers, carry a light, and wear blaze orange on any walk-in during hunting season. Wear a life jacket on any boat, kayak or paddleboard, tell someone your plan and return time, and Clean, Drain, Dry between waters (how to clean your gear). See Colorado Safety Essentials and our cold-water shoulder-season checklist.
Regs
Read CPW rules and regulations, the CPW fishing hub and Colorado fishing eRegulations for the exact water before you keep a fish. We do not print bag or size limits. Our Colorado fishing laws page explains where to look.
Plan it
Last report: Vega and Kannah, week of Sept. 28. This week's Vega post: Vega: the fish, the closed ramps, and a safe day. Background: Kannah Creek prep, Grand Mesa lakes beyond Vega and fishing during hunting season. Build the day in the Trip Builder. VCO merch is made to order and ships from Grand Junction (VCO merch).
