Vega: the fish, the closed ramps, and a safe day
You rolled a trailer up Highway 330 toward Collbran and expected a ramp. Both ramps at Vega are closed. The day is a bank day, or it is a turnaround.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife, on the Vega State Park highlights page read October 8, 2026, names rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. Fish those two from the shore. Do not put a motorboat in the water today.
Take the road that is open
From Grand Junction, the Vega State Park page sends you off I-70 at exit 49, south on Highway 65, then east on Highway 330 through Collbran, then right on Mesa County Road 64.6 at the park sign. The park is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The visitor center is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Leave the trailer if the gate is shut
Early Settlers Boat Ramp has been closed for some time. As of July 23, the Island Boat Ramp is also closed for the rest of the season because the water is low. A hand launch is still allowed. A hand-launched boat with a small outboard or a trolling motor still needs an aquatic nuisance species inspection at the visitor center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. A hand-launched boat with no motor is exempt from that inspection. Clean, drain, and dry the hull anyway. If the boat is on a trailer and you needed the ramp, turn around.
USGS station 09096100 read 7926.06 feet and 2825 acre-feet at 6:00 a.m. MT on October 8, 2026. The reading is provisional. CPW had already closed both ramps for low water. The gage does not reopen a ramp.
Fish the two trout the page names
Rainbow trout and cutthroat trout are the fish the highlights page names. That page says fishing goes year-round, from a boat, from shore, or through the ice. The boat part waits on a ramp that is open. Today the shore is the method that matches the closure.
Stand on the bank you can reach without crossing the closed ramp. Keep the first casts short. A snag will pull you onto the mud the low water left behind. The accessible pier sits near the Oak Point Boat Ramp on the northeast side. The same page says that pier is not fishable during low water. Call the visitor center at 970-487-3407 before you count on the pier.
Ice fishing is listed for the winter months. The page does not give a thickness. Do not walk out because the season is listed. If you cannot prove the ice, stay on shore.
The animals the park page names
The Vega State Park page names mule deer, elk, and yellow-bellied marmots, plus ravens, black-billed magpies, mountain bluebirds, and spotted sandpipers. Watch them from the trail. A fed animal learns the parking lot.
One habit for this park
The park page allows dogs when they are leashed. Keep the leash on along the shore. A loose dog on a closed ramp turns a fishing day into a chase.
Cold water is the limit
The highlights page calls Colorado water cold for most of the year and says a life jacket has to be readily accessible for every person on a vessel. Wear it on a hand-launched boat. Swimming is only in the wakeless zones that page names: Island Campground, Turtle Shell Day Use, and Early Settlers Campground. The water is still cold there.
The fish cleaning station by the camper services building at Early Settlers is normally open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, weather permitting. Outside that window, clean the fish at home.
The next time you use this is the moment the trailer is still hitched and the ramp sign says closed. Unhitch only for a hand launch the inspection rule allows. Otherwise drive back down Highway 330 with the boat dry.
