Life Jackets in Colorado: PFD Rules and Habits for Boats, Kayaks, and Paddleboards

If you fish from anything that floats in Colorado, the life jacket is the piece of gear that matters most. CPW says most boating accidents happen when someone falls overboard, and that a life jacket keeps your airway clear and your head up even if you stop swimming. Here is what the rules say and the habits we follow on top of them.

What CPW requires

  • One per person: a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person on board, readily available, in good and serviceable condition.
  • Right size: each life jacket must fit the person who will wear it.
  • Kids: children 12 and younger must wear a life jacket whenever their vessel is on the water, except in an enclosed cabin or below deck.
  • Inflatables: approved for people 16 and older, used according to the label, and not approved for personal watercraft, white water paddling, or towed sports.
  • Hand-launched craft count. At Rifle Gap this year, CPW reminded visitors that the life jacket requirement includes kayaks, canoes, and paddleboards.
  • Other gear: CPW lists a sound-producing device such as a whistle as required, a fire extinguisher where applicable, and a Type IV throwable on boats 16 feet or longer.

Habits on top of the rules

  • Wear it, do not stow it. Falls happen fast. A life jacket under a seat does not help in cold water.
  • Read the label. CPW says if you can no longer read the label, the life jacket is no longer in good condition.
  • Fit test: buckle and snug it, then have someone lift at the shoulders. It should not ride up past the chin or ears.
  • Match the jacket to the job. Paddling, motorboat, and float tube days call for different styles. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.
  • Whistle on the jacket, not in the bag.

Safety

CPW says water below 68 degrees is dangerous because sudden immersion can cause gasping and swimming failure. That is why the habit of wearing matters more than the rule of carrying. CPW also warns that alcohol and boater fatigue together make accidents and drownings more likely. Keep the skipper sober. For more, read our cold water safety checklist and small craft safety guide.

Borrowing a life jacket

Some Colorado state parks have loaner programs. CPW says Highline Lake State Park near Loma has a free life jacket loaner program at its visitor center, and all you need is ID. Call ahead to confirm sizes.

Verify regs

Rules get updated, so read CPW Boating Safety for current requirements and consider a boating safety course. If you trailer a boat or run a motor, Colorado requires inspection before launch. See CPW Boat Inspections. For fishing rules, check the current CPW Fishing Brochure.

Shop related

We do not sell life jackets, and we think you should try one on in person. The VCO Safety Kit, with a whistle and first aid pouch, is waitlist only, with nothing to pay today. Our merch is in our merch shop.

Plan with Trip Builder

Pick boat or kayak style in Trip Builder, then run the wind and fog go/no-go before you launch.
