Grand Junction Fishing Report: Colorado River, Sep 12, 2026

This is a checklist from public sources. We didn't write it from the water. We didn't make up bite notes, and we don't claim we were on this water today.

This report covers the Colorado River near Grand Junction and James M. Robb Colorado River State Park (Corn Lake and the park sections next to it).

We wrote it on Saturday, September 12, 2026 (America/Denver).

Before a weekend trip, check the three things public sources are pointing to now. The first is low provisional flow and fairly warm water on the Colorado River near Cameo. The second is CPW's Friday stocking list for nearby waters. The third is any drought closure, voluntary or mandatory, on the Fishing Atlas.

Conditions (dated public sources only)

  • USGS 09095500, Colorado River near Cameo, CO (provisional). The latest readings were about 958 cfs and a gage height of ~3.04 ft. Water temperature was ~20.7 °C (~69 °F) and dissolved oxygen ~8.6 mg/L. The time was about 15:45 MDT on 09-12-2026. That flow is below the long-term median for Sep 12 (~2,270 cfs), and even below the listed record low for the date. Plan for low water, and don't read it as a hot bite. USGS Cameo gage
  • CPW drought and warm-water advice. CPW says cold-water fish recover poorly when the water nears ~71 °F. It advises fishing earlier, moving to cooler water, landing fish fast and following voluntary or mandatory closures. CPW fishing
  • James M. Robb, Corn Lake (official park page). The Corn Lake day-use section is open daily, 5 a.m.-10 p.m., with warm-water and cold-water fishing. The park says Corn Lake is stocked with black crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass and trout each spring and fall. That describes a seasonal program. It does not mean fish went in this week. What changed (check it, don't assume it)

  • Flow. Cameo ran near 958 cfs on Sep 12, 2026, low compared with past Sep 12 numbers (provisional). Check the gage again the morning you leave.
  • Heat stress. ~69 °F water at Cameo is getting close to CPW's warm-water caution zone. Start early and carry a thermometer. Stop fishing for stressed trout if it climbs further.
  • Stocking report (updated Fridays). The Friday, Sep 11, 2026 trout stocking list featured northwest ponds and other waters in the region. Examples are Axial Basin, Scenery Pond, Craig City Pond, Circle Park Pond and Sleepycat Pond. No catchable-trout line for Grand Junction or James M. Robb showed up on that Friday list.   • Closures. Earlier in summer 2026, CPW posted voluntary fishing closures for low flow and warm water on Western Slope rivers. They included Colorado River segments upstream toward Rifle. Status can change, so open the Colorado Fishing Atlas and confirm before you leave the driveway.

How to approach it

These are technique and safety notes. They don't describe today's hatch or bite.

  • Park ponds such as Corn Lake, Connected Lakes, Island Acres or the Fruita lakes. A light spinning rod or a simple bait setup suits a family day on the bank. Respect park hours and leash rules, and leave no trace.
  • The river. Low flows change the hazards for wading and boats. Slick mud and cold water still matter in September. Wear a life jacket in any boat. Wear rubber soles if you move between waters, so you don't carry invasive species.
  • Warm water. If your thermometer reads near 70 °F or above, put the fish first. Keep fights short, keep fish wet and skip long photo holds. You can also switch to warm-water species or cooler water.
  • Access. Confirm which James M. Robb section you'll visit. The units differ, and some are day use while others have camping. Private property is common off the public stretch.

"Before a Colorado River or James M. Robb weekend, how do I check regulations and flow without guessing from social media?"

Use three official checks the morning you leave:

  1. Regulations and closures. Open the Colorado Fishing Atlas and the Colorado Fishing Brochure for your exact water. Confirm your license and Habitat Stamp at CPW shop licensing.
  2. Flow and temperature. Check the provisional USGS Cameo gage (09095500) for flow and water temperature. On this report date, Sep 12, 2026, Cameo showed low provisional flow and water near ~69 F. Treat that as a reason to check before you go, not a bite forecast.
  3. Warm water and drought. Read CPW's advice again on CPW's fishing page. When the water nears ~70-71 F, CPW advises starting earlier, finding cooler water, landing fish quickly, keeping them wet and following any closures.
