Vega Reservoir on October 23: a shore day
Vega on October 23, 2026 is a shore day. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has both boat ramps closed for the rest of the season because the water is low. Hand launching is still allowed. This note is how to fish it from the bank, what the park page names, and one habit for the closed cleaning station.
The place
Vega State Park sits on the northeast edge of Grand Mesa National Forest, east of Collbran. CPW's park page, read October 23, 2026, calls the reservoir a high-mountain water in a montane meadow. The park is open 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. The office is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check with the Vega State Park visitor center before you drive. See CPW's Vega State Park page.
From Grand Junction, CPW's directions are I-70 exit 49 to Highway 65, then Highway 330 through Collbran to County Road 64.6, then the park sign. A day pass is required. The fee table on that page does not match the fee line in the header, so this note does not print a dollar amount. Read the pass line on the park page before you go.
The fish the page names
The park highlights page says fishing goes on year-round, from a boat, from shore, or through the ice in winter, and it names rainbow trout and cutthroat trout. It sends bag limits to the fishing brochure and the Fishing Atlas. This note does not print a bag number, because that highlights page does not state one. See the Vega highlights page. The Colorado fishing brochure is the limit sheet.
CPW's rainbow trout page says rainbows may be caught with flies, baits, and lures. That is the species page, not a Vega hotspot. See CPW's rainbow trout page.
How to fish it this week
Both ramps, Early Settlers and Island, are closed. A trailer boat stays on the trailer. Fish from the bank. If you hand-launch a boat that has a small outboard or a trolling motor, CPW still requires an aquatic nuisance species inspection before it goes in the water. Those inspections are at the visitor center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Human-powered hand-launched craft are exempt from the mandatory inspection, and CPW still asks you to clean, drain, and dry the boat, the boots, and the fishing gear. CPW's clean-your-gear page is the method.
The accessible pier is by the Oak Point ramp on the northeast side. The highlights page says that pier is not fishable during low water, and it says to call the visitor center for current conditions. Check with the Vega State Park visitor center before you plan the day around that pier. The mistake is driving up and finding the pier out of the water with no second plan. The second plan is any open bank, on foot.
Park hours end at 10 p.m. Be off the water before that.
Wildlife on the park page
The park page names mule deer, elk, and marmot, and it says dogs must be leashed. The highlights and nature sections also name porcupine, golden-mantled ground squirrel, mountain cottontail, and western terrestrial garter snake. Birds named on the page include raven, black-billed magpie, mountain bluebird, and spotted sandpiper. Watch them from the trail. Do not walk up on a bedded animal for a photo.
One habit for this week
The fish cleaning station is closed for the season. CPW prints that on the park page and again on the highlights page. Do not leave a gut pile or a rack at the closed station or on the bank. If you keep a fish, take the waste home with the fish. The mistake is treating a locked station as a trash can.
On the water, CPW classifies Colorado water under 70 degrees as cold water for most of the year, and it says a life jacket is required and sized for every person on a vessel. Wear it. The paddleboard counts. That line is in the water section of the highlights page.
Friday's fishing report for this water is a separate post: Vega fishing report, Friday, October 23, 2026.
