Gunnison River Trip Prep: From Grand Junction to the Gunnison Gorge

The Gunnison River meets the Colorado River in Grand Junction, so for valley anglers it is right there. But the stretch most people mean when they talk about fishing the Gunnison is upstream, in and below the Black Canyon. That is remote, steep country. This guide covers how to plan a day without getting in over your head.

Know which part of the river you mean

  • Near Grand Junction: the lower river through Whitewater and town. The USGS gage Gunnison River near Grand Junction is the reference here.
  • Gunnison Gorge and the Black Canyon: CPW's current brochure lists the Gunnison from 200 yards downstream of Crystal Reservoir dam to the North Fork confluence as Gold Medal water. Much of it is inside Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the BLM's Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area.
  • Upper river: CPW also lists Gold Medal water from Almont to the U.S. 50 bridge, near the town of Gunnison.

Each stretch has its own land manager, access, and rules. Decide which one you are fishing before you pack.

Getting into the Gorge

BLM says the Chukar Trail trailhead is the primary boating access to the wilderness part of the Gunnison Gorge. Its directions start in Olathe and follow Chukar Road for 7 miles. BLM notes the road starts as 2WD gravel but the last half is high-clearance 4WD. There is a self-serve fee station for wilderness permits at the trailhead. Other Gorge trails are steep hikes in and out, so plan the climb back up when you are tired.

What to pack for a canyon day

  • More water than you think, plus a way to treat river water if you run out.
  • A headlamp, even if you plan to be out by afternoon.
  • A warm layer and a rain shell. Canyon shade gets cold fast.
  • A printed map or offline map. Do not count on a signal.
  • A small first aid kit and the BLM permit if your route needs one.

Safety

  • Remote means slow help. Expect little or no cell service in the canyon. Leave a detailed plan and a turnaround time with someone at home.
  • Cold, strong water. Tailwater below dams is cold. Wade carefully, use a wading staff, and never cross where you cannot see the bottom.
  • Life jackets for boats. If you float, CPW requires a Coast Guard approved life jacket for each person, and the Gorge has real rapids. Only float with people who know the run.
  • Heat and climbs. Summer canyon walls hold heat. Carry more water than you think and start the hike out early.
  • Flows change. Check the gage trend the morning you go, not the night before.

Verify regs

Gold Medal stretches often have special regulations. Read the Gunnison River section in the current CPW Colorado Fishing Brochure and check CPW Fishing. Then check the land manager: the BLM Chukar Trail page for Gorge permits and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park page for park rules. We do not print limits.
