Fryingpan River Trip Prep: Gold Medal Tailwater Below Ruedi

The Fryingpan River runs from Ruedi Reservoir down to the Roaring Fork at Basalt. It is one of the best known trout rivers in Colorado, and it is a real drive from Grand Junction, so most people plan it as a full day or a weekend. Here is how we would prep for it.

Where the Gold Medal water is

CPW's current fishing brochure lists the Fryingpan River from Ruedi Reservoir dam to the Roaring Fork River as Gold Medal water. CPW's Gold Medal program recognizes waters that hold a high number of large trout over time. That also means a lot of anglers, and special regulations on much of the river.

Read the flow before you go

The Fryingpan below the dam is a tailwater, which means flows depend on releases from Ruedi. The USGS gage Fryingpan River near Ruedi is the one to watch. Check it the morning you leave and look at the trend. A change in release can change wading conditions in a few hours.

Access and private land

The road up the valley follows the river, but not every bank is public. Public and private land are mixed along the river. Fish where signs show public access, park only in pullouts and lots, and never cross fences. National forest land in the valley is managed by the White River National Forest. Our public access guide covers the habits that keep access open.

What to pack

  • Waders or wet wading gear suited to cold water, a wading belt, and a staff.
  • Polarized glasses to see the bottom before you step.
  • Layers and a rain shell. Mountain weather changes fast.
  • Food and water for the whole day. Plan your stops before you leave.
  • A printed or offline map showing public access. Cell service can drop in the valley.

How we would plan the day

Check the gage before you leave Grand Junction, pick two or three public access spots from official maps, and fish the first one early. If it is crowded, move on rather than crowding someone else. Plan to be off the water with enough light to walk out and enough energy for the drive home.

Safety

  • Cold water year-round. Water released from the bottom of a dam is cold. Dress for it even in summer, and pack a dry change.
  • Slick rock. Use a wading staff and boots with good grip. Shuffle, do not stride.
  • Know your limits. Do not cross where you cannot see the bottom or where the water is pushing above your knees.
  • Weather. Afternoon storms in the mountains can bring lightning fast. Leave the river when you hear thunder.
  • Drive time. Leave room for the drive home tired. Do not plan to fish until dark and then drive mountain roads.

Verify regs

Gold Medal waters often carry special rules on tackle and harvest, and the rules can differ by section. Read the Fryingpan section in the current CPW Colorado Fishing Brochure and check CPW Fishing before you rig. We do not print limits.

Shop related

Straight talk: we do not sell fly rods, and we are not going to pretend we do. Our VCO Spin Rod is waitlist only, with nothing to pay today, and it is built for other water. For the drive, our VCO Tumbler and trucker hat are in our merch shop.

Plan with Trip Builder

Map the trip in Trip Builder, and check our latest Fryingpan report for recent conditions. Read the cold water checklist before you wade.
