Fall is one of the finest seasons to fish around Grand Junction. The triple-digit canyon glare of July gives way to crisp cottonwood mornings, lower post-irrigation river flows, and fresh autumn trout stockings across the five units of James M. Robb Colorado River State Park (Island Acres, Corn Lake, Wildlife Area, Connected Lakes, and Fruita).

1. Check Live River Flows Before You Head Out

Before you step off the bank or slide a boat into the mainstem Colorado River, check the live USGS gages on our Western Slope Gages page (including the Colorado River near Cameo `09095500` above De Beque Canyon and the Colorado River near the Colorado-Utah state line `09163500`). Provisional gage readings update throughout the day and tell you whether the river is holding steady or bumping up after an autumn rain event.

2. Dress for Cold Water & Chilly Canyon Shadows

Even when afternoon air temperatures in the Grand Valley feel mild, late-season river water is cold enough to trigger cold-water gasp reflex if you slip off slick cobble (NWS cold-water safety). Wear a USCG-approved life jacket on any craft, carry a dry wind layer in your pack, and bring drinking water for the dry desert air.

3. Verify Current Regulations & Stocking Reports

Check the CPW stocking report to see which park ponds received recent rainbow trout plants, and verify current bag limits in the CPW fishing regulations brochure.
