The Colorado River through Grand Junction: pick the section first

The Colorado River through Grand Junction is one state park split into sections, not a single turnout. Colorado Parks and Wildlife runs it as James M. Robb Colorado River State Park, from Island Acres at Palisade to Fruita. This note is how the sections differ and where a boat can go in. It is not a fishing report.

The place

CPW calls the park a string of pearls. The sections are the Colorado River Wildlife Area and Pear Park, Connected Lakes, Corn Lake, Fruita, and Island Acres. Corn Lake, in Clifton, is the headquarters. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, CPW's directions from I-70 west are exit 37 for the I-70 Business Loop and US-6, then a left on 32 Road, to 361 32 Road, Clifton, CO 81520, where 32 Road meets the river. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Corn Lake office is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends and holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with park offices at Corn Lake, Fruita, and Island Acres. See CPW's James M. Robb page.

A day pass is required. The header on the park page and the fee table under it do not match, so this note does not print a dollar amount. Read the pass line on the park page before you go.

The park page, read October 24, 2026, says there are no closures at this time. Read that line again the morning you leave. Do not run an old summer closure as if it were still the rule, and do not skip the page because it was clear yesterday.

Pick the section before you leave the driveway

The mistake is one plan for the whole park. Island Acres is the east end. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the address on that page is 1055 Interstate 70, Palisade, CO 81526, CPW says to take I-70 to exit 47 and go five miles east of Palisade, and the Island Acres park office manages the section. You can camp there. Hand-propelled boats, sailboats, and electric boats can be hand-launched on the lake. Boats are not allowed in the swim area. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the swim beach is open May 1 through Labor Day, so it is not the plan today. CPW says boating is not permitted on the Colorado River from Island Acres because of a dangerous roller dam downstream. The mistake is launching the river boat off the lake ramp because the river is right there. See the Island Acres page.

Corn Lake is day use only. It is the river launch on the east side of the valley. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the page says the ramp is on the southeast corner of the lake: enter from 32 Road and follow the road around the east side toward the river. You cannot camp here. See the Corn Lake page.

Connected Lakes is the day-use section on Dike Road, in the southwest part of Grand Junction. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, CPW's directions are Broadway, Highway 340, to Power Road, then northwest on Dike Road, there is no visitor center on site (the Corn Lake park office manages the section), and the page lists four accessible fishing piers. The river ramp is north of Duke Road, on the bank between the Duke Lake and Kingfisher parking lots. You cannot camp here. See the Connected Lakes page.

Fruita is the west end, the first section if you are coming in on I-70 from Utah. You can camp there. The in-town float on the Connected Lakes page ends at Fruita. Red Rocks Lake, in this section, is on the mussel list below.

The Wildlife Area and Pear Park section is the quiet one. The river sections page says facilities were kept to a minimum, and that the use is hiking, wildlife watching, and limited fishing. Do not plan a developed ramp day there. See the five sections.

How to be on this river

CPW's Connected Lakes page, accurate as of October 24, 2026, says a river trip from Connected Lakes to Fruita is about 10 miles, that float times average 3 to 4 hours, and that this part of the river is whitewater with sections of Class II rapids. The move is to believe that sentence before you untie. The mistake is a pond boat, or a plan that needs the trip to take an hour.

Have a life jacket of the right size for every person on the river or the lakes. The river sections page, accurate as of October 24, 2026, says Colorado law requires a life jacket readily accessible for every person on a vessel, and that children under 12 must wear one on a paddleboard, a boat, or a kayak. Corn Lake and Connected Lakes both say loaner jackets are at the ramp through the Save-A-Life program. Return the jacket at a station in the Grand Valley. The mistake is one jacket for the boat, or a loaner that rides home in the truck.

The river passes private land. CPW's river sections page says to use the public and private signs and to bring a map. The mistake is a lunch on a bank that felt public because you floated to it. If the sign says private, stay on the boat.

Be off the water by the park close. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, that is 10 p.m.

The fish the pages name

Corn Lake's page says the lake offers warm and cold water fishing and is stocked with black crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass, and trout each spring and fall. That page does not state a bag or a size. This note does not print one. The fishing brochure linked from the river sections page is the limit sheet. Read it for the water you are standing on.

CPW's Colorado River body-of-water page, read October 24, 2026, stops at the Silt boat ramp. It covers Rock Creek downstream to that ramp, and it names rainbow trout and brown trout for that upstream reach. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the trout bag and possession limit on that page is two fish. Grand Junction is not that water. The mistake is using the Silt page as the Grand Junction rule.

Mussels on this stretch

The park page says the Colorado River from the confluence with the Eagle River downstream to the Colorado-Utah border is designated infested for zebra mussels. The same line names West Lake and East Lake in the Wildlife Area section, and Red Rocks Lake in the Fruita section. The river sections page says hand-launched, human-powered craft are exempt from the mandatory inspection. CPW still asks you to clean, drain, and dry the boat, the boots, the waders, and the fishing gear. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the park has two self-decontamination stations, one at Fruita and a basic one at the Corn Lake river section. The mistake is a hull that looks clean and a live well that still holds water, then a drive to the next reservoir. CPW's clean-your-gear page is the method.

Wildlife on the park page

The park page names bald eagle, great blue heron, osprey, lark bunting, sagebrush sparrow, mule deer, muskrat, common raccoon, and desert cottontail. Watch them from the trail. Accurate as of October 24, 2026, the section pages say pets stay on a leash no more than six feet. The mistake is a dog in the willows because the trail felt empty.
