Colorado Cold-Water & Shoulder-Season Safety Checklist

Short answer: In Colorado shoulder seasons, assume the water is colder than the air feels. Wear or stage a well-fitted PFD for boat and kayak days, dress for immersion risk, carry a whistle and throw aid when on craft, and verify CPW boating and fishing rules before you leave the truck.

Educational safety notes from Viral Cast Outfitters. This is not a rescue course and not legal advice.

Why shoulder season bites harder

Sunny valley temps can hide cold current, snowmelt pulses, and rapid weather flips on the Western Slope. Hypothermia risk rises when people under-dress for the water temperature rather than the air temperature.

Cold-water safety checklist

  • PFD: USCG-approved, sized correctly, and worn when the craft or conditions call for it. Verify current CPW wording before you launch.
  • Layers: wool or synthetic base, wind shell, and a spare dry layer in a dry bag.
  • Signaling: whistle; throw bag or line for boat and kayak teams.
  • Footwear with grip; wading belt if wading.
  • Buddy system and float plan for reservoirs and river corridors.
  • Know your swim and self-rescue limits; cancel when wind and chop stack up.
