Chatfield Reservoir Trip Guide: Busy Metro Water Done Right

Chatfield State Park sits on the southwest edge of the Denver metro area, near Littleton. It is a big, busy park with a reservoir CPW lists at about 1,500 surface acres. If you are visiting the Front Range from the Western Slope, it is an easy add-on. Here is how to plan it.

What CPW says about the fishing

CPW's park page says spring brings the start of open water fishing and that Chatfield's trout fishing is some of the best in the Denver area. Through summer, CPW says walleye, bass, perch, crappie, catfish, and an occasional trout are caught, with the best action early in the day or late at night. CPW periodically stocks rainbow trout and other fish.

Getting there

CPW gives a useful tip: do not type "Chatfield State Park" into your mapping app, because it can send you the wrong way. Use one of these addresses instead: 9700 S Wadsworth Blvd, Littleton, 80128, or 11500 N Roxborough Park Rd, Littleton, 80125. A park pass is required.

Boats and ramps

CPW lists north boat ramps on the northwest side and a south ramp on the southeast side. Boat traffic is the main hazard here on busy days. If you fish from shore near a ramp or channel, keep your line out of the path of boats.

How we would plan the day

  1. Check the CPW park page the night before for closures and ramp notices.
  2. Pick your timing. Early and late in the day are often quieter, with fewer boats on the water.
  3. Choose shore spots away from the ramps and swim areas.
  4. Bring a backup spot in case parking is full.
  5. Clean, drain, and dry your gear before you fish another water.

What to pack

  • Water, a hat and shade, and a hat.
  • A headlamp if you plan to stay late.
  • A life jacket for anyone in a boat or kayak.
  • A small bag to pack out line and trash.

Before you leave the Western Slope

A trip to Chatfield from Grand Junction means mountain passes and long stretches between towns. Check road conditions and closures on COtrip.org, the Colorado Department of Transportation's traveler site, the night before and again in the morning. Fill up before the long gaps, carry water, food, and a warm layer in the vehicle, and leave your route and return time with someone at home. If the weather turns on the drive, it is fine to change plans and fish closer to home.

Safety

  • Boat traffic. In a kayak or small boat, stay near shore and out of main lanes. Wear a bright color.
  • Life jackets. CPW requires one per person on board, and kids 12 and under must wear one.
  • Night fishing. If you fish late, carry a headlamp, know the park hours, and tell someone your plan.
  • Closures. CPW has posted tree removal closures in the park. Follow posted closures.
  • Heat. Summer afternoons are hot on the open shore. Bring water.

Verify regs

Read the Chatfield section in the current CPW Colorado Fishing Brochure, check CPW Fishing, and look at the Chatfield State Park page for closures. Colorado requires inspection for trailered and motorized boats, covered on CPW Boat Inspections. Clean, drain, and dry before your next water. We do not print limits.
